Exciting Announcement! UAF has awarded Larry Bartlett with an honorary Doctor of Education degree for Larry’s substantial education work in Arctic survival and medical physiology.
Larry shared, “This honorary PhD in Education means that UAF is awarding the prestige of significant contributions made to my field community and to the world at large. For that recognition, I am deeply honored and my work focus feels legitimized. I was most touched by UAF Chancellor White when he conveyed ‘you’ve done the hard work to earn a doctorate, and you’ve done it with persistence, integrity and honor.’ However, my kids are still not impressed when I tell them to trust my words, I am a doctor after all.”

“Larry Bartlett will receive an honorary Doctor of Education degree. A health care professional, entrepreneur and wilderness expert, he served as a licensed practical nurse and combat medic in the U.S. Army during Desert Storm, earning 19 awards in his 12-year military career. Bartlett founded Pristine Ventures, creating innovative products for Alaska backcountry adventures. An authority on wilderness medicine, survival and logistics, he has written books and peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has taught Arctic survival and medical physiology at UAF and has devoted 25 years to meat care science, educating the public on wild meat salvage, preservation and transport in wild settings.”
The Doctorate will be officially presented to Larry during UAF’s 2025 Commencement weekend in May.
